Socialization is Key
World renowned vet turned dog trainer, Ian Dunbar, says this about socialization, “Socializing your dog with different people, animals and environment is crucial for their development” and “Puppyhood is the most critical time for socialization and training” and finally “A well-socialized dog is a happy and confident dog.”
The most important thing you can do for your puppy is socialize them as early as possible. This does not mean that socializing them later in life is not important or effective, but the earlier you can socialize, the less fearful and anxious behaviors are likely to develop.
Socialization also teaches one of the best lessons to dogs that we, as humans, cannot. It teaches them how to interact with each other. That may not sound very important, but just like people, puppies are not born knowing how to communicate. They have to interact with other dogs to understand what is acceptable, and non-acceptable behavior with each other. They communicate with their vocalizations, body language, and mouths when they want to play, when they are scared, when coming too close to them is not okay, or when something they just do not like is happening…like being approached before they are comfortable. All ages benefit from socialization, which is why group classes are essential.
Seth Hutson, of Pawsitively Great Dog Training, provides group socialization and dog obedience classes for all ages, five days a week, every week. We work together in the classes to socialize, teach obedience cues for good manners and safe behaviors, and to build confidence in all dogs so they can live their best life with you!
